Pula is a city harboring a wealth of history. It’s most famous for being a natural harbor that was developed during the Augustan era. This made it a prize that saw its fair share of invaders.

Geauxing Places Travel in Denham Springs, Louisiana, chose this city to highlight this week because, despite its age and history, there are numerous majestic buildings still standing in it. Its natural parks make it a pleasant and interesting place to see and be in.

The Sergii family was one of the most powerful families that ever lived in Rome. The family has been immortalized with the Arch of the Sergii, built to commemorate its involvement in the Battle of Actium; a battle which altered the French landscape forever.

The size of the arch is impressive, to say the least. But it’s the friezes carved into the stone which grab your attention and hold on to it. The carvings are beautiful, depicting things like garlands and cupids.

Look closely and you’ll realize there is even a relief of a horse-drawn chariot right beneath the carvings. The attention to detail used in building this arch is simply incredible, and it’s not something you should miss seeing.

The Forum is Pula’s main square. Over two millennia ago, it was the seat of many an important gathering. Fast-forward to modern day and it still assumes a similar role, often being the host of big events.

This makes the Forum a perpetually busy place that is always full of activity. Take summer, for instance, when it’s the season of cultural events and concerts in Pula. And if the Croatian national football team is playing in the World Cup, the Forum turns into the busiest place in the entire city.

The design of the Forum alone deserves your attention. The other structures erected around it accentuate its classic look too, because many of them are Roman monuments. And the city-hall, with its renaissance-style architecture, makes for a conducive place for a ceremony.

You can tour around each of these places and enter many of them. Take a trip to the Forum before you end your vacation. You’ll be glad you did.

You can’t miss this structure because of how stark it is from its surroundings. It’s a portico (entrance) of another ancient building that has persisted in Pula for eons. The temple is over two thousand years old, built during the time of Augustus.

The Temple of Augustus was eventually renovated and turned into a church. This change happened when the Romans accepted Christianity. The temple yet assumed more roles by becoming a granary and then a lapidarium. If you don’t know what that is, think of it as a museum for pieces and fragments of archeological interest and monuments.

Walk into this temple and be met with a wonderful sight of ancient pieces of sculptures and stonework sourced from all parts of Pula. You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy what this temple has to offer.
