• Your paperwork. Your ID, your passport, your medical paperwork, your insurance – you really need to keep these safe. Ideally, don’t walk around wearing them on yourself too much – make copies and make sure you always have them in your room, well-deposited. You never know what could happen and your paperwork can get you out of trouble.
• Your money. This comes without saying, really. However, it is really important to emphasize that you should never travel with a lot of cash on you. Yes, you might have to withdraw cash from the ATM and pay the fee for it, but traveling all-cash makes you a target for a lot of bad situations. Also, if you ever lose your credit card, do make sure to call and block them immediately.
• People who are too friendly. Traveling and meeting new people go hand in hand and it would be a real pity not to socialize a little when you are abroad – after all, this is how you infuse yourself with the local culture and discover new places. However, if you meet someone who appears to be too friendly, it’s probably best to keep your distance. There is a limit you should impose – because, in the end, your safety is at stake.
• Odd places to eat at. Just like meeting new people, food is part of the entire experience of traveling. However tight your budget may be and however much you would like to eat at a place though, do make sure it meets basic sanitary standards. The last thing you want is to spend the rest of your vacation with a severe indigestion – or worse, some sort of infection, virus, or bug!
