Spend your day marveling at the works of art in the Guggenheim Museum. This museum opened in 1997 and is housed in a metal ship-like building that was designed by Frank Gehry. Interesting right? We think so too. In this museum, you’ll find works by artists like Anish Kapoor, Anslem Kiefer, Eduardo Chillida, Jeff Koons and Yves Klein. You’ll also find a display of large artwork outside of what is known as the Art District.
Pintxos bites consist of small pieces of bread topped with every kind of local ingredients from vegetables to meat, seafood, and cheese. You’ll find lots of pintxos bars in Bilbao so make sure to try at least once to get a taste of the delicious pintxos.
Casco Viejo is Bilbao’s old town and is a great place to explore. You’ll find narrow winding streets with an array of shops, bars, and colorful architecture to enthrall your mind. It is also where you can find the Catedral de Santiago de Bilbao, the Plaza Nueva, the Archeological Museum and the churches of San Antón and San Nicolás.
La Ribera is a famous market in Bilbao and sits just on the edge of Casco Viejo. It was built in 1929 on the site of an old market dating back to the 14th century. It’s a great place to find restaurants, bars, live music and also pick up some local products as souvenirs. La Ribera is the biggest covered indoor market in Europe.
This is a great way to explore Bilbao by boat. You’ll find many of the attractions we’ve mentioned here and more located along its banks.
There is a funicular cable railway that takes you the top of the Mount where you’ll find beautiful walkways, some great restaurants and a great view of the city of Bilbao. The cable railways date as far back as 1915.
Have a guided tour around or see an exhibition or show at the Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It is a culture and leisure center housed in a building re-designed by Phillipe Starck. It rests on 43 unique pillars or columns which is a great piece of artwork all by itself. The Azkuna Zentroa is worth the visit.
